Going Deeper – 10.19.2025

Breaking Ground

What do you know about your family history? Where did your family originally come from? How important is ancestry to you & how you think about your identity?

The Dig

This Sunday, we continued our series Covenantal by exploring God’s Covenant with King David, where God moves His redemptive story forward by expanding His Covenantal commitment from a people to an eternal Kingdom.

For context, this story occurs when King David is at the height of his success, which leads him to take it upon himself to build God a permanent Temple. However, God tells David no. With this in mind, read 2 Samuel 7:1-16.

What promise does God make to David? What commitment does God expect in return?

Why do you think God refuses to let David do what he wants only to, instead, give him a more sprawling promise & blessing? What legacy was David trying to build for himself, as opposed to the one God wanted to call him to build? Why might David need to be humbled before receiving this critical role in God’s Story?

How does this Covenant further fulfill the overarching purpose of God’s Covenants (i.e., restoring His blessing to the world through Abraham’s descendants)? How does it continue moving the story towards God’s original, universal redemptive goal?

Close by reflecting on how this Covenant might challenge you in this season.

Can you recall a time in the past when you really wanted something but didn’t get it? How did you respond? Has your perception of that moment changed in hindsight?

Where does it feel like you’re being denied something that you really want in the present? How has that made you feel? How have you responded to those feelings?

How might reflecting on your own past experience & this story of God’s faithfulness change your perspective when it comes to what you identified? How could this change of posture reorient your understanding of the legacy you are trying to leave behind with your life?

Getting Out of the Hole

Take time each week to reflect upon the Covenant explored in the Sunday sermon.

  • Read 2 Samuel 7. What stands out to you about God’s Covenant with David? What does God state is the foundation of this Covenant? How does David respond to this?
  • Why do you think God humbles David before giving him this Covenant? How might that be essential to preparing him for the role he’s about to play in God’s redemptive story?
  • How might this story speak to you in this season? Where might it be calling you to deeper levels of humility & trust, especially in areas where you feel discontent or disappointed?

Journal about how this prayer practice makes you feel this week. Share your experience with your group next week.
