Breaking Ground
What is your favorite book or book series? Why?
The Dig
This Sunday, we continued our series Why by diving into two questions: “How was the Bible created?” & “How can we trust the Bible?”
Begin by reflecting on your own experiences with these questions.
What does the Bible mean to you? What has been your relationship with this book & how has it changed over time?
What leads you to trust (or distrust) it or its contents? In your mind, what does it mean that the Bible is true or trustworthy?
Critically, when engaging with this topic, we need to grapple with the tension between the Christian belief that the Bible is uniquely inspired by God &, simultaneously, written by human beings just like us. On top of this, we’re also told that by Scripture that God’s Spirit is still active within us, inspiring & promoting New Creation & divine inspiration in our present world.
What does it mean to you that the Bible is divinely inspired? How does this impact the way that you engage with the Bible & its story?
How does the Bible’s human authorship impact your understanding of it as God’s Word? Do you ever struggle with this idea? How does the Bible’s human authorship interact with its divine inspiration in your mind?
Do you believe that God’s Spirit is still working through, speaking to, & inspiring human beings today? Can you identify a work of art, story, or experience that you felt was inspired by God in your own life? If so, how did God speak to you through it?
What would a healthy balance of all three of these components look like for you today? How might it change the way you think about & interact with the Bible moving forward?
Getting Out of the Hole
Take time each week to reflect upon the Sunday sermon.
- When have you been most inspired by the Bible or a biblical story? Why?
- How did that feeling of inspiration impact you after the fact? How did it tangibly change you or how you live?
- How can you better use the Bible for inspiration today? What practices or habits would you need to add to your daily life in order to do so?
Journal, reflect, & pray on how God might be speaking to you through each week’s teaching. Share your experience with your growth group next week!
