What is your favorite song?
This week, explore the theme of worship & justice from the Prophets.
First, reflect on the words worship & justice.
What does worship mean? What does it include? How do you worship?
What does justice mean? What does it include? How is it maintained or brought about?
Next, read Isaiah 58:1-10. Here, God harshly challenges Israel to realize that they have missed the entire purpose of worship even though they followed all the rules of worship.
What is the difference between how Israel was worshipping God & how God wanted to be worshipped? What do you think God sees as the purpose of true worship?
What is the relationship between worship & justice? Why does God believe that these two can’t be separated?
Why does God see the connection of these two things as being so critically important to the life of His people?
What does this tell us about God, ourselves, & what He wants to do in our world through us?
Reflect on your own understanding of worship.
Does it include the activities & actions listed in Isaiah 58? (I.e., ending oppression, feeding the hungry, caring for the poor, etc.). If not, why do you think you’ve separated worship from these things?
What would it look like to intertwine these worship & justice in your own spirituality? What would need to change? What would you need to stop & start doing?
Getting Out of the Hole
Take time in this series to reflect on & pray over each theme covered. This week, reflect on worship & justice:
- Where & how do you worship in your life right now?
- Where & how do you seek justice in your world?
- How can you connect these two concepts in your pursuit of God & spirituality?
- What is one thing you can add to your regular schedule that is justice oriented as part of your worship of God?
Journal, reflect, & pray over these questions. Ask God where you need to hear & take part in the hopeful message of the Prophets. Share your experience with your growth group next week!
