Breaking Ground
What was your least favorite chore as a kid?
The Dig
This week, we continue through the Gospel of Mark.
Read Mark 6:6b-13. Here, we see Jesus expanding his Kingdom ministry by sending out, equipping, & working through his disciples as conduits of his healing & mercy.
What tasks does Jesus instruct his disciples to do?
Why do you think it takes this long for Jesus to send his disciples out to do ministry? What might Jesus have wanted to do first before sending them out?
What does it tell us about God that He seeks to work through people instead of doing everything Himself?
Reflect on verses 8-11 specifically. Jesus instructs his disciples to go into the world totally dependent upon the generosity of those they are seeking to minister to. He also instructs them not to impose themselves onto those who reject their message.
Why does Jesus instruct his disciples to rely on the dependence of others when doing ministry? How might this better equip them to represent the Kingdom of God to others?
Why do you think Jesus instructs his disciples to accept rejection & not impose themselves onto those who aren’t interested in their message?
Reflect on these verses in your own life.
Where are you living & acting as a conduit of God’s grace & healing to others? In other words, where do you see yourself as releasing your ego so Christ can work through you to help others?
Where has distrust of God’s provision or the desire to control others gotten in the way of you being a conduit for the Kingdom of God to others?
How might this passage reorient you towards a healthier model of ministry or caring for your neighbor in this next season of life?
Getting Out of the Hole
During this series, reflect on each week’s message:
- Read through Mark chapter 6.
- Sit with each story & reflect on what they might be saying to you in this season.
- In particular, reflect on what Jesus is doing & how people are responding to it (good or bad). Ask yourself, “Where am I in this story?” Then try to find yourself in each character (good or bad!)
- Journal about what comes to mind & how this might reorient you in this season. Write about how these stories speak to your work, ministry, relationships, self-care, & goals.
Journal, reflect, & pray on how God might be speaking to you through this week’s teaching. Share your experience with your growth group next week!
