Breaking Ground

What was the hardest homework assignment you’ve ever been given? Why was it so challenging?

The Dig

This week, we begin our new series Reimagining Mission where Pastor Scott will be leading us through E3’s mission & discipleship process.

What do you believe the purpose of your life is?

What role does the word mission play in defining or fulfilling that purpose?

In your experience, what leads you to stray from acting on & working to fulfill that purpose/mission? For example: crisis, stress, conflict, escapism, self-pity, selfishness/self-centeredness, fear, greed, etc.

Read Matthew 22:34-40 & 28:16-20. In the first text, Jesus redefines/reorients the Torah (the commands & Scriptures of God) entirely around love. In the second, Jesus commissions those who follow him to be & go make disciples

In Jewish Tradition, to be a disciple of a Rabbi was to follow, learn from, & ultimately fully mirror their teaching & way of life.

When held together, how does this inform what Jesus believes is the purpose of our lives

How should this inform how we understand mission (both individually & communally)?

What leads us to stray from the purpose/mission that Jesus calls us to? NOTE: both in terms of how we love others right where we are & the challenge to move outward to others.

Reflect on your current lifestyle, circumstances, choices, habits & activities.

Where are you succeeding at achieving your purpose & mission?

Where have you strayed from alignment with your purpose & mission? What led you to do so?

What might it look like to recommit to your purpose & mission in this coming season?

Getting Out of the Hole

During this series, reflect on where you are engaging & living out each topic of E3’s mission:

  • What does discipleship mean to you as a follower of Christ?
  • What activities (individually & communally) ideally define active discipleship?
  • Where are you successfully engaging in those activities? Where are you falling short?
  • Identify one activity both individually & in community life that you can add to your everyday life this fall. Commit to it for the next 4 months.

Journal, reflect, & pray on how God might be speaking to you through this week’s teaching. Share your experience with your growth group next week!
