What was the biggest decision you have had to make in your life? What was it like taking it on?
Read Romans 6:1-10. Paul addresses the belief that grace should be used as a way of not healing in our brokenness & experiencing transformation in our lives (i.e., God’s forgiveness allows us to keep doing the things we know are hurting us & others). Paul rejects this by pointing to baptism.
What are your first reactions to Paul’s description of baptism?
Notice that Paul does not see Christ’s death & resurrection at something that we only learn about. Rather, it is something we enter into, experience & take part in ourselves as disciples. In fact, it is thinking baptism only in terms of head knowledge & not as an ongoing experience that needs to change.
Is this how you have usually understood baptism or the Christian life?
Does this change how you understand the purpose of baptism & what it produces? In particular, what does it mean that baptism is both an event & an ongoing process for a disciple?
Take time to discuss Paul’s belief that we are called to experience our own death & resurrection in the present (not just as a future event after we die).
What does it mean to die to who we once were as disciples of Jesus? What might this look like in real-life practice?
What does it mean to experience resurrection from who we once were as disciples of Jesus? What might this look like in real-life practice?
How does this change how you think about human brokenness & transformation?
Close by reflecting on what dying to your old self & experiencing resurrection life means for you in this season of your life.
Where in your life do you feel you are still a “slave” to a lifestyle, thought process, or broken pattern? What might it look like for you to experience a death of your old self in that area of your life?
What might resurrection on the other side of dying look like in that area of your life? How does taking part in Christ’s own death & resurrection in the present change how you approach healing, growing & transforming in this area?
As you move into the new year, what is one, small way you can begin to experience new life in this area? Keep it small, focused, practical & actionable.
Close by praying together as a group about what you’ve discussed & how you want to move forward this year.
Getting Out of the Hole
Take time this week to reflect on what it means for you to be remade by God in this next season.
What has come up for you over the course of this season?
What might it look like to take a leap of faith into the unknown in that area of your life?
What does the first step towards being remade look like for you?
Journal about your answers to these questions & pray for insights. Share your experience with the group next week!
