Breaking Ground

Do you have any end of year “rituals” or habits? What are they?

What would you like to be true of you in 12 months?

The Dig

GROWTH

Read Galatians 5:22-23

In which of these areas of spiritual fruit do you need to grow the most?

In relation to the list, what will be true of you in 12 months? (3 years? 5 years?)

Is your life currently on track to make that a reality?

What needs to change?

Where are you in E3’s discipleship process?

MISSION

Author Parker Palmer says that one way to find your area of mission and impact is to look at the place where your deepest joy meets the deep needs of the world.

What are some areas of deep joy for you?

Where are some areas of deep need in the world around you?

Are you serving in this area? Why or why not?

LOVE

Read Mark 1:10-11

Why is it important to know (and experience) God’s love for you BEFORE you start doing ministry?

What are some examples of getting this wrong?

Have you embraced God’s radical love for you?

What are some things you can do to experience more of God’s love?

Getting Out of the Hole

Respond to the questions from today’s message and consider where you are in E3’s discipleship process:

– you can find a Growth Group on mye3.org (just browse search for “Growth Group” and find a day/time that matches your availability
– find a serving opportunity by filling out your spiritual gifts and passions (if you know them; in your profile), and then searching for an associated serving team

On January 7 we will begin a four-week series called “Get Useful”, where we will share some practical tips on how to bring some order to your life, including your money, time, technology and your bias.

12.24.2017 | “Adventus: The Oppressed + Christmas Eve”

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

Did you participate in any of the service projects? If so, what were your favorite moments, or favorite projects?

If you didn’t have a chance to participate, have you ever served people, or been a part of a Global Outreach trip?

How did it effect you?

The Dig

Read Luke 4:18-21.

How would you describe “oppression”? How do you think it feels?

As Christians—or even just human beings—how are we called to respond to oppression?

Read Matthew 25:31-46

How would you paraphrase or summarize Jesus’ words here?

What does Jesus prioritize?

How do Jesus’ priorities align or differ from what you’ve seen or experienced in faith communities?

Why do you think Jesus cares so much about the poor, the blind, prisoners, and oppressed people?

How can you respond to these Scriptures? What might be God calling you to do personally, or as a Growth Group?

Getting Out of the Hole

Respond to the “Grand Reset” by offering a gift or a need.

Think about what you want to be true of your life going forward in 2018. What do you want to pursue intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

On December 31, we will usher in the New Year with worship, prayer, and communion. On January 7 we will begin a four-week series called “Get Useful”, where we will share some practical tips on how to bring some order to your life, including your money, time, technology and your bias.

GOING DEEPER

12.17.2017 | “Adventus: The Blind”

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

How easy is it for you to talk about your shortcomings? How many people know about your faults?

The Dig

Read Luke 4:18-21.

What do you think it was like to be blind in the ancient world?

Why does the beginning of Jesus’ ministry (which is what this Scripture is) include an announcement of “sight for the blind”?

Read Romans 12:3

Do you have a tendency to think too much of yourself? If so, in what way or ways?

How do those tendencies impact your community?

Why is it important to have an accurate view of both your faults and your strengths? How does “right-sizing” impact your community around you?

Read Romans 12:4-8

What does knowing your spiritual gifts and your “place in the body” have to do with admitting your blind spots and/or right-sizing yourself?

Read Romans 12:9

Seen together how do you think all of these things—blind spots, “right-sizing”, the body, and honoring others—work together to create a healthy community?

Where in your life do you need to grow in light of this message?

Getting Out of the Hole

Participate in the response project for the week: Sign up for a Service Project!

In addition, think of the different ways you have been (or still are!) “blind”.

Have a courageous conversation this week, and ask someone you trust about your potential blind spots.

11.26.2017 | “Adventus: The Poor”

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

Take some time to share stories of your Thanksgiving holiday: What were 1-2 high points? Difficult times?

The Dig

The central Scripture for this series is Luke 4:16-21. Take a moment and read this together.

What is your reaction to this Scripture? What does it make you think about?

Read James 1:22-27.

What are the implications for not just hearing Scripture, but also DOING what it says?

How about some implications for the opposite? For hearing and NOT doing?

What are some examples of both that you have seen?

How do you do with looking after the orphans and widows of the world? How do you do with remembering/helping the poor?

Why do you think it’s such a challenge to live this out?

Theologian Scot McKnight would say that James’ reference to “the perfect law” (verse 25) is Jesus’ command to, “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.”

How do you think following this law actually brings freedom?

What blessings (v25) are available for us when we live out this law?

Who is “in distress” in your world that you could give tangible help to this season?

James is the brother of Jesus. Does that have any affect on how you read/hear these words?

Getting Out of the Hole

For this week’s remembrance of the poor, you can purchase school supplies for W.T. Moore Elementary School (specific items are indicated on the tags hanging on the Christmas tree).
