Breaking Ground

What would you do if you knew it would succeed?

The Dig

Read Exodus 3:4-12

What is your reaction to vv9-10? Is there anything in the world that you wish were fixed?

What it would mean if God told YOU to “GO” in this area?

In what ways can you identify with Moses’ reaction in v11?

Moses is not the only person in the Bible who is sent into the unknown. In a similar way Jesus actually tells his to GO.

Read Matthew 28: 16-20 and Acts 1:7-8.

How do you think they responded to this call? Do you think they were afraid?

Do you hear echoes of Exodus 3:4-12 in Matthew 28:16-20? If so, what are they?

What might these echoes tell you about God?

Do you think there’s a temptation to accomplish the MISSION of God in such a way that does not reflect the CHARACTER of God?

Why do you think that’s the case?

Read Galatians 5:22-26

As you respond to God’s call in the world, how well does your “work life” match up to the list of the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Is there a gap?

If so, how can you fix it? What needs to change?

Getting Out of the Hole

If God has not given you a call/vocation (as best as you can tell), pray that you will receive insight and guidance to see how you can impact YOUR world. Remember: NO ONE ELSE CAN BE YOU.

If God has already given you a unique call, pray for continued courage and faith to keep working. Pray also that you are able to do your work in such a way that reflects the character of Christ.

Breaking Ground

What are five words that you would use to describe your character?

What are five words YOUR FRIENDS would use to describe your character?

The Dig

Read Exodus 3:1-4

Why do you think God chose Moses?

Read Exodus 3:11-15

What did Moses do to necessitate his running away?

What words would you use to describe Moses’ character AT THIS POINT IN HIS STORY?

Is there anything in your life or character that makes you think, “God would NEVER call ME”?

Why or why not?

Read 1 Timothy 1:12-17

How does Paul describe his past?

How does Jesus respond to Paul’s past?

How does Paul respond to God? (v17)

Read more about Paul’s past in Acts 7:54-8:1 and 9:1-5 (he was also known as Saul).

PRACTICALLY, SPEAKING, how do you think it’s possible for Paul to acknowledge his past, and yet at the same time be confident in his calling? How do you think he does it?

Is there anyTHING—or anyONE—that God could be calling you to?

If so, is there any hesitation on your part?

What would it look like if you responded to God’s call?

Getting Out of the Hole

Develop “eyes to see” and “ears to hear.”

Cultivate an awareness of God’s constant presence and invitation. Using simple prayers such as, “Lord, I know you’re here; show me where and how you are working” can help open us up to the “burning bushes” in our lives.

Breaking Ground

Looking back on the weeks of the this series, what stands out to you? What has stuck with you?

How is your life different?

The Dig

Read Ecclesiastes 5:1-3

Is your prayer life marked more by talking or listening?

Have you ever tried to just listen to God? Why or why not? If you’ve tried it, how did it go?

If you haven’t tried it, how do you think a person “listens” to God?

Read Ecclesiastes 5:4-7 and Matthew 5:33-37

How good are you at letting your words match your heart? Do you hide behind “Christian-ese” and “Church-speak”?

If you do tend to hide, why do you think this is the case?

What would your heart say to God (and to people) if it could speak?

What other damage can be done by not letting your heart match the words of your mouth?

Read Ecclesiastes 12:9-14

How does the writer sum up the book?

What effect does God have on the “vapor” of our lives?

How do you think you could invite God into vapor that is in your life?

Getting Out of the Hole

This week, focus on being more honest with people (and with God). When you are hurting, don’t hide behind “Christian” or “Church-y” words.

Also, as we move on from the book of Ecclesiastes, continue to monitor your life for where and when you are too focused on vapor, and invite God into the experience to help you.

Breaking Ground

What do you work for? What are you trying to accomplish?

The Dig

Read Ecclesiastes 4:7

What activities in life do you feel are meaningless?

Why do you feel that way?

Why do you think people still do these meaningless activities?

Read Ecclesiastes 4:8

How do you balance your current quality of life verses legacy investment?

Why are unfocused temporal gains depressing?

Who are you working for?

Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

What is your definition success?

Have you ever “fallen” and not had someone to help you up?

What was it like?

Is there a time when you have “fallen” and there has been others to help?

How was the experience different?

What principle is the teacher trying to communicate in verse 11?

How have you found this to work in your life?

What principle is the teacher trying to communicate in verse 12?

How have you found this to work in your life?

Getting Out of the Hole

A well lived life is done in community and dependence on others. Working for independence in counterproductive and meaningless because it ends in dust. Commit to community and make your work mean something today.
