Breaking Ground

How has this series impacted your understanding of generosity?

The Dig

Read Exodus 3:7-10

Why is God stirring here? Why is he going to “come down”?

Why do you think God says to Moses, “I am sending you…”?

Read verses 11-17

How does Moses react?

How does God react? What does he promise and/or offer to Moses?

Read Exodus 4:1-2

What does Moses’ staff represent?

If God was to ask you the same question, “What is that in your hand?”, how would you respond?

Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-15

What might it mean to “sow generously”?

What are some needs that you see around you in the world?

What would it mean to be generous and meet some of them?

Getting Out of the Hole

In what way can you commit to being a part of the “blessing” that God wants to pour out on the world? What time, talent, or treasure do you have to give?

Commit to making a phone call, having a conversation, or making a connection to follow through.

GOING DEEPER

01.22.2017 | “Generosity #2”

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

Is giving (time, talents, or treasure) a part of your life?

What is your expectation of giving? How much do you give, and how do you determine the guidelines for giving?

The Dig, Part 1: “Idolatry”

Have you ever had to “turn away” from an idol?

How did you do it?

Four steps to turning away from an idol are:

1. Name it
2. Tell it to someone
3. Turn from it (cut out “nouns”: people, places and things)
4. Watch out for it to return

Which of these seem the most difficult for you? Why?

The Dig, Part 2: “Guidelines to Generosity”

Read 2 Corinthians 8:9-14

What’s the relationship between Jesus Christ and generosity?

How did Jesus “make us rich”?

According to verses 11-12, what are some characteristics of generosity?

According to this verse 13, what is the goal of generosity?

Getting Out of the Hole

Respond to the call to the generous life in one of the three arenas.

Breaking Ground

Would your friends call you a generous person? Why or why not?

The Dig

Read Malachi 3:6-12

What strikes you about this passage?

What does it say about God?

What does it say about humanity?

Read Psalm 50:9-12

According to this scripture, what is the nature relationship with God? In other words, who owns our “stuff” (including time, talents, and treasures)?

Have you ever acted like this wasn’t true?

Why is it so easy to believe that we own our stuff?

Read Exodus 20:1-3

What is the relationship between generosity and idolatry?

Do you have any idols that you could readily identify?

E3 talks about generosity in terms of time, talents and treasures. Which of these arenas are easiest for you to give in? Which are the most difficult?

Why do you think it’s so easy for us to not bring our gifts into God’s “storehouse”? In other words, why do you think idolatry is so easy for us in the area of generosity?

Getting Out of the Hole

Respond to the call to the generous life in one of the three arenas.

Breaking Ground

What are some of the craziest/most interesting church events or programs you’ve been to?

How did they contribute to making a disciple of Jesus? Did they?

The Dig

Read Matthew 28:19

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? How would you describe that in your own words?

Read Mark 12:28:31

What does it mean to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength?

Is there anything in your life that you are tempted to hold back from giving to God?

What does it mean to love others as yourself?

John 7:37-39

What do you think Jesus means by this statement?

What would it mean to you to have “streams of living water” flowing out of your heart?

How does that different from the “cup mentality”?

How is that different from the way you have previously understood faith?

Getting Out of the Hole

Take the next step down the pathway of discipleship: engage in a lifestyle of worship, connect with a Growth Group, and/or look for an opportunity to serve.

Breaking Ground

How big of a deal is the New Year to you? How do/did you celebrate?

Do you make resolutions and/or goals? Why or why not?

The Dig

These are the questions that Pastor Eric led us through during our Sunday gathering. Feel free to share your answers, or dialogue about them now.

“Unallocated time will inevitably flow towards our weaknesses and brokenness.”

How do you feel about this statement?

Have you ever experienced this?

What were you most proud of and grateful for this year?

What lessons did you learn?

What do you need to forgive yourself or others for?

What are your intentions for 2017?

What word will be your 2017 theme?

Getting Out of the Hole

Keep track of your responses so that they might be a guide for you as 2017 begins.
Spend some time in prayer as a group for our plans, intentions and goals for the New Year.

FYI: On Jan 8, Pastor Eric will share some of the “intentions” and “themes” for E3 as a community.
