Breaking Ground

How was your Thanksgiving? What new/old relational dynamics did you have to navigate? How did that play out?

The Dig

Are there parts of the story of Jacob where you can see elements of your life? What do you relate to in Jacob’s life?

Has God been a part of those things? Where can you see Him at work?

Read Genesis 28:10-17 and John 1:51.
What did Jacob see in his dream? From Jesus’ comment in John, what conclusions do you come to?

What is the ultimate blessing that God is foreshadowing to Jacob?

Read Genesis 32:22-31.
Who was Jacob wrestling with?

Why does he believe this man can bless him?

What is significant about the name change that happens?

How do you relate to this? What areas have you wrestled with God about? Where are you limping? Where have you won?

Getting Out of the Hole

How does Jacob’s story impact our lives today? What step of faith is God calling you to take this week?

Set some time aside to be alone with God.
-Has God spoken promises to you? Are they fulfilled? Remember them and talk to God about them.
-Are you facing fears? Go through Jacob’s prayer in Genesis 32:9-12 and talk to God about them.
-Do you need a new name? Ask God to tell you who you are and make steps to follow His voice.
-Who does God have in your path that needs freedom this week? Ask God to open your eyes to see where he is working in the world so you can take another step forward in partnering with him in his work to love the world and bring redemption.

Breaking Ground

How has this series impacted your life?

The Dig

Read Genesis 15

Notice verses 1-4. What does God promise Abram? Why do you think this is significant? What do these things mean to Abram?

In verse 2, Abram seems to “talk back” to God. How does that strike you? Have you ever done that? What happened?

Why is significant that God telling Abram that his “own son” will be his heir?

Read verse 6. What does Abram know about God at this point?

Does that stop his journey? Should it?

What about you? Have you ever been hesitant to move forward on your spiritual journey because you didn’t have “all the right answers”?

Read verse 17.

What is your reaction to the idea that God puts himself on the line if (really WHEN) we break covenant with him?

What does this say about God?

What does this say about us?

Getting Out of the Hole

How does our “Origin Story” impact our lives today?

CREATION: God created the world—and us—“good”, and we are called to be His image-bearers in the world.
FALL: As good as the world can be, something is broken. We need a little help.
CALL: Faith—and following God—almost always involves a step out into the unknown.
COVENANT: Our God fulfills both sides of the Covenant promise all by himself. He puts his own “life” on the line, even if we break the covenant.

How can these things impact your life today?

Breaking Ground

When you think about a “calling” what comes to mind?

Do you feel like you have a calling?

Why or why not?

What is it?

The Dig

Read Genesis 12:1-3

What are your initial thoughts about Abram’s call?

What guarantees did God give Abram?

What questions do you think Abram had about God’s call on his life?

Read Genesis 12:4-6

Who did Abram take with him?

Who would you take with you?

What did Abram take with him?

What would you take with you?

What do you think the conversation was around the campfire on their first night of travel?

If you were at the campfire, what questions would you ask Abram?

Read Genesis 21:2

How many years did it take God to fulfill His promise?

Do you think Abram ever lost heart/faith?

Read Psalm 25:4-5

Does this prayer resonate with you?

What are the main components of this prayer?

Getting Out of the Hole

Pray Psalms 25:4-5 every day this week. Seek for God to show you the right path, point out the road to follow, lead you by truth, and put your hope and faith in Him.

Breaking Ground

Was there an occasion where you had a favorite item or toy growing up that broke? How did you react?

The Dig

Read Genesis 3

When everything changes, (vv1-7) what’s God’s initial response (vv8-9)?

What is significant about this?

What strikes you about the response of the man and woman in verses 10-13?

Have you ever behaved similarly?

If you were writing the Genesis 3 story, how would you have had God respond to humanity’s mistake/transgression? What would you have done to them?

What does it say about God that he knits garments for Adam and Eve (v21)?

What’s the difference between the consequences of our mistakes (3vv16-19) and God’s view of us?

Read Romans 5:12-21

What is Paul saying here about our connection to Genesis 3 (specifically in Romans 5v18-19)?

What is Christ’s “one act of righteousness” (v18-19)?

Getting Out of the Hole

The events of Genesis 3 affect humanity’s vocation (their call to reign), and their ability to be full icons/reflections of God.

Which of these effects are more powerful in your life?

What’s the cure or remedy? How can you take steps to heal so that you can more more appropriately reign or govern, and/or to be an icon of God. Write those steps down and commit to acting on one of them.
