GOING DEEPER | ORIGINS | Week 1

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

If your life was a book, what would the name be? (Either an existing book or a made-up title.)

What would the major plot points be?

The Dig

Read Genesis 1:1-2:3

What stands out to you in the creation story? What does this story say about God?

What does it say about humanity?

What does it say about God’s relationship to humanity?

Read Genesis 1:26-27

What does it mean to made in God’s image and likeness?

Is it easy to forget that we are “icons” (images)? Why or why not?

How can we do a better job of remembering this fact?

What role does Jesus have in our understanding of Genesis 1:26-27? (Hint: read Colossians 1:15-20 and note the similarities)?

Read Genesis 1:26-28

What does it mean to “reign” and “govern” the earth?

In what ways can this go “sideways” for human beings?

What role does Jesus have in our understanding of “governing” and “reigning”? (Hint: read Philippians 2:5-11.)

Getting Out of the Hole

Be aware of the “story” that you’re living in:

  • a God you can know
  • you are made in his image
  • you are born to reflect that image out to the rest of creation, and to “reign”

Meditate and pray on these truths, and choose to live them out in your daily life.

GOING DEEPER | BAPTISM

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

Why is celebration important? Why is it important to react and to remember?

The Dig

What stories from baptism Sunday impacted you? What do you remember?

Have you been baptized?

What do you remember about it? How did it mark (or change) your life?

Take a few minutes and review your journal or your Pathways Workbook.

What has God done in your life over the previous 40+ days? What can you celebrate? What are you still hopeful for?

Spend time in prayer in your Growth Group, celebrating God’s victories in your lives and in our community, as well as asking for strength for what He still has yet to do.

Getting Out of the Hole

Share your celebrations and victories with your Growth Group and with the community. Cultivate an attitude of thankfulness to God for this period of time.

GOING DEEPER | WORSHIP

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

Has there ever been a time in your life when you were facing something that really had you scared?

How did you react? How did you deal with the fear?
What would you have done differently?

The Dig

Do you have any current “giants” in your life? How do they affect you?

Read Exodus 14:5-14

What is happening in the story?

Why is Israel afraid?

What is Moses’ response? What does he tell the people to do? How easy (or difficult) is it to follow Moses’ advice in our own lives? What does it mean that Yahweh —The LORD— fights for Israel? What does it mean that Yahweh —The LORD— fights for us?

How could this change your attitude in the face of your “giants”?

Getting Out of the Hole

One of our responses to a God who fights for us is gratitude in worship. What can you do this week to take a step forward in the area of worship? Consider how your work, home life, or even hobbies could be places and/or acts of worship. Pause and give thanks to God.

Engage in the events of this week.

Pray for those being baptized next week!

GOING DEEPER | SERVICE

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

How easy is it for you to serve others? Do you naturally gravitate towards service?

Who in your life models service? Who are the “service superstars”? How do they model it? How do they live their lives?

The Dig

Read Matthew 20:20-28

What strikes you about this passage?

Why were the ten angry with James and John?

How does Jesus respond?

What does this passage say about Jesus and God?

What does it say about us?

How does this passage challenge you?

What is an environment or situation in your life in which you find it difficult to serve others? Why do you think this is the case?

What would it look like if you could humble yourself in this environment?

Getting Out of the Hole

What can you do this week to take a step forward in the area of service? Is there an area where you could help out at E3, in your home, or elsewhere?

Make a commitment to connect with someone to discover how you might be able to serve them?

Engage in the events of this week.

GOING DEEPER | INVITATION

Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.

Breaking Ground

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “evangelism”? How about “invitation”?

How did your spiritual journey begin? Was there one person in particular who triggered your journey? What did they do or say that helped you in your journey?

The Dig

Read 1 Corinthians 2:1-4

Why is community so important?

In what way does Paul come to the church at Corinth?

How does this contrast with your understanding of “evangelism”? How would you define “invitation” in your own words?

Read Matthew 22:1-14

Who is invited to the feast? Who actually shows up?

What types of things keep us from accepting the invitation to the feast? Have you ever neglected an invitation from God in order to tend to something else in your life?

In what ways is life with God a “feast”? How would you describe it? Is it something worth inviting someone else to?

Why do you think the man who isn’t wearing proper clothes gets thrown out of the feast (v11-14)?

Getting Out of the Hole

What can you do this week to take a step forward in the area of invitation? Is there someone in your life who is suffering? Can you pray for them?

Is God calling you to live out invitation by going on a Global Outreach trip? Contact the Ministry Team Leaders and see how you can get involved.

Engage in the events of this week.
