Breaking Ground

Do you have a friendship that has been around for a while? What’s your longest running friendship?

Was it ever threatened over something that later seemed insignificant? What was it and how did you get through it?

The Dig

Read Exodus 19:1-5

Begin by discussing the idea of WHEN God decides to give Israel the “Ten Words”, or commandments.

In your own words, what does it mean that God frees his people BEFORE he gives them instructions for living?

What about you, specifically? What has God freed you from? What has he done in your life?

Spend some time in gratitude, sharing stories of what God has done in your life.

Read Deuteronomy 32:9-11

On Sunday, Sam used the imagery of God coaxing us out in order to care for us.

What strikes you about this passage? What stands out to you and why?

In general, why do you think we tend to hide from God?

How easy (or difficult) is it for you to think of God loving us as absolutely and tenderly, as a parent? Is your image of God one of faithful love, care, and kindness, or is it something else?

How are some ways that people hide from God?

What are some of the ways in which YOU hide from God, either in the past or currently?

What would it take for you to come out of hiding?

What might you be missing out on?

Getting Out of the Hole

Our belief and understanding of who God is—and who WE are in relation to Him—drives so much of who we are and what we do. This week, get honest with yourself about your beliefs and understanding about God. Is there something there that might need to change? If so, bring that to a trusted friend or spiritual advisor.
