03.08.2020 | GOD, PART 2 | Wk 6: “A New Provision”
Join the community and go deeper with this Bible study.
Share a story about the most generous thing someone has done for you. Who was it? What did they do? How did it impact you?
Read Matthew 14:13-14.
Just before this story – Jesus finds out that King Herod has murdered his cousin, John the Baptist, for criticizing him – it is a shocking & horrifying piece of news for Jesus.
From this discovery, Jesus tries to get away to grieve, but can’t because he is intercepted by a crowd of people in need.
How would you have responded if you were in Jesus’ position (being disrupted in your plan to get away)?
Notice, it says that Jesus “had compassion on them & healed their sick.” How do you react to Jesus’ response?
In other words, Jesus responds to the pain of his loss by channeling it into helping others – becoming other-person focused in an act of compassion.
What does this show us about Jesus & what he came to do?
Have you ever found yourself doing something similar? NOTE: this can be done in a healthy way (turning pain into something redemption) & an unhealthy way (denial/coping) – reflect on which it was for you).
Next, read Matthew 14:15-21.
Having watched Jesus’ response, the disciples learn to see the needs of those around them. But, when they bring it to Jesus, he tells them to do something about it.
Why doesn’t Jesus feed them on his own? What does it say about us that Jesus sees us as the conduit for his provision in the world?
Why do you think the disciples object about how little they have at first – despite having seen Jesus perform many miracles up to this point?
Do you struggle to give back because of a feeling of scarcity?
From this – Jesus takes what they have, breaks it, blesses it, & then gives it back to them to give away. This is the process he sees as being necessary for us to be conduits of God’s provision in the world.
Reflect on this process in your own life. Where have you seen a need in the world that has moved you to compassion – but you haven’t acted to help yet?
What do you have (no matter how small) that you need to lay down so it can be broken & blessed for helping address this need?
What would it look like for you to give what you have away (time, talents, treasures) for helping in that area of need?
Getting Out of the Hole
Take time this week to reflect on where you need to take a step forward in serving & giving back as Jesus’ conduit of provision in our world.
- Where do you see a need in our church that moves you? In Tallahassee? In the world?
- What time, talent, or treasure do you have that you haven’t put into play for the Kingdom yet?
- What might it look like to lay that down for God’s work in our world?
- What is one step you can take to give that gift of yours away?
Journal about your answers to these questions & pray for insights. Share your experience with the group next week!
